About
Soot & Spirit offers a curated collection of nature-inspired jewelry hand fabricated by artist Mazmodae Banburski-Fahey. Each piece is thoughtfully designed and produced in small batches amongst the lush greenery of Issaquah, Washington.
No two pieces are exactly alike, reminding the wearer of the wonderfully varied shapes and textures found in our natural world. In today’s busy tech-driven landscape, it can be easy to forget the wilderness we all come from. With a beautifully crafted piece from Soot & Spirit, you can reconnect with your inner wildling and celebrate what makes us human.
Our Story
Mazmodae Banburski-Fahey has been crafting unique sterling silver and bronze jewelry since they began studying Jewelry and Metalsmithing at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in the fall of 2013. After graduating with a dual BFA in Sculpture and Interrelated Media in 2017, Mazmodae experimented with creating pendants using twigs and natural materials found while walking in the forest.
After creating different shapes with the twigs, the new shapes would be surrounded in silica investment and cast using the organic-burnout technique. These early designs were shared with family and friends, and were especially adored by Mazmodae’s mother, Amy Barton. ( Moms are the best like that.)
Amy wore her favorite pendant every day, receiving numerous compliments from strangers and acquaintances alike. Noticing the pendants popularity, Amy urged Mazmodae to develop a complete line of what she now referred to lovingly as the “woodland twig collection”. Mazmodae continued making pendants as requests came in, but never developed a line like Amy had suggested. Finally in 2023, Mazmodae agreed to go into business with mom Amy, where the two would collaborate on new designs and Mazmodae would make them. A new enterprise was born!
Sadly Amy passed away in March 2024 after a nearly year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. Her love for her children, pets and the great outdoors will never be forgotten. Soot & Spirit was created in her memory, and it is our hope that her legacy will live on in her favorite designs. Amy loved our unique silver jewelry, and we hope that you will too.
Sincerely ,
Mazmodae Banburski-Fahey
